In a recent newspaper article Dr. Aat Pisanwanich, Director of the International Trade Studies Centre of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, propounds that Thailand’s business economy needs to make major improvements in communication skills and learning the ways that businesses operate in other countries if they want to remain competitive in the increasingly integrated ASEAN market:

For Thailand’s business economy to compete it needs to improve its English skills before the Asean Economic Community comes into effect in 2015

“We (Thailand) have to improve a lot, especially in language for communication, and must learn more about each other in ASEAN.”

Dr. Aat points out that other ASEAN countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam are becoming more serious competitors in a scenario that includes the full economic and labour liberalisation under the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. He also quotes rice, rubber, sugar, automotive, electrical appliances and electronics as strong export growth sectors for Thailand.

Investing abroad requires advanced English language skills

A recent newspaper article reported that Staporn Kavitanon, chairman of the prime minister’s economic advisory team, has proposed the establishment of a $1 billion revolving fund to support Thai investment abroad. Furthermore, the Board of Investment is expected to hire consultants this month to study how to promoteThai investment abroad.

Recent newspaper reports have highlighted the need for Thai professionals to enhance their English language communication skills in advance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) pilot free labor market plan that will allow specialists and professionals in seven areas to work anywhere they choose in the region commencing 2015.

English Click holds English course workshop at Kasetsart University

On September 7 English Click in partnership with the directors and faculty of Kasetsart University conducted a workshop titled The importance of general English communications skills in the workplace.

The seminar highlighted a number of general situations and requirements that occur in all working organizations, whether they are in the government sector or in the private commercial field.

The workshop was based on a 24-page booklet containing activities that enabled the students to practice their English skills.

Our general English communications skills workshop/ seminar modules comprise:

1. General introduction to English language

2. Telephoning

3. Looking after visitors

4. Writing

5. Presentations

6. English language social communications in the workplace

The event was well attended and after Ajarn Angelo Mercure coaxed students over their traditional feelings of shyness the workshop saw lots of interaction with all those attending having fun while learning.

Kasetsart University teams up with English Click for general English communications

The importance of general English communications skills in the workplace will be emphasized at a seminar/ workshop being conducted by English Click in conjunction with Kasetsart University on September 7.

The two and a half hour session is a realistic and positive initiative by the University’s teaching staff and recognizes that their students, once they enter the workforce after graduating, will advance further and faster in their chosen career if they possess high level English language skills.

The seminar will highlight a number of general situations and requirements that occur in all working organizations, whether they are in the government sector or in the private commercial field.

Clearly there is a host of particular vocabulary and expression sets applying to each individual work pursuit and the students at Kasetsart University will need to follow up with further specialized study to acquire the English language jargon of their own chosen profession.

The seminar is based on a special 24-page booklet divided into six modules and contains a number of activities that enable the students to practice their English skills.

Our general English communications skills workshop/ seminar modules comprise:

1. General introduction to English language
DVD illustrating English dialogue in the workplace.

2. Telephoning
Audio examples of x dialogues.
Activity – students practise a conversation in pairs.

3. Looking after visitors
Meeting, welcoming and looking after a visitor – offering refreshments.
Activity – students role play this scenario in pairs.

4. Writing
English language writing used in the workplace: e-mails and letters, reports and research documents, minutes of meetings.
Activity – students to complete a short writing exercise.

5. Presentations
Common English language used in presentations and basic rules for giving an effective presentation.

6. English language social communications in the workplace
Audio example of a work related English language social communications dialogue.
Activity – students hold a social conversation, e.g. at a conference, in groups.

The evening promises to be informative and rewarding, and we will post photographs of the seminar in a future Talking Point update next week.
